The Japanese traditional art paper called washi, handcrafted with natural, environmentally friendly materials, was recognized as a UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.

To support this growing interest in washi in New York, a five-day event will be at Tenri Cultural Institute. This event will promote and sell the works of Mitsunori Sakamoto, whose works focus on Japanese landscapes and scenery. Plain sheets of washi strictly selected from all over Japan will also be available for sale.

The opening reception will feature musician Etsuko Sakai and performer Sanyutei Ema, who will introduce the beauty of Japanese culture to New Yorkers.

Throughout the exhibition 30-minute demonstrations of papermaking techniques will take place two to three times a day.
