Thursday, November 03 01pm to 05pm
Kimmel Center Room 802 (Shorin Performance Studio)
60 Washington Square S, New York, NY 10012
This is our 2nd “Culture Day” event to promote awareness of Japanese culture among enrolled and prospective students. As part of the 20 July 1948 as a State Holiday law, promulgated on 3 November 1946, “Day of Culture” (文化の日) recognizes the new Constitution of Japan’s focus on “peace and culture”. Unlike 3 May, Constitution Day, 3 November has been situated in leading role as a day of recognition of multitude of cultural practices. Throughout various regions, local municipalities, private and public institutions, artist groups and other organizations celebrate the day with “cultural festivals” and exhibitions. Many museums suspend admission fees on the day for open attendance, often highlighting special exhibition and interactive experiences. The day is also known for the state recognition of artists, scientists, writers, performers, crafters, fashion designers as well as architects with the Order of Cultural Merits. For the event, this year, we will have live demonstrations and activities. Following last year’s very successful presentations, we will again offer calligraphy, origami, kimono dressing, traditional dance, tea ceremony, and martial arts along with a lecture by a NYU faculty. In addition we will present on Japanese new media (animation, manga, vocaloid, etc.) and innovative technology, especially as they are incorporated in everyday life.
