On October 21, 2016, New York emerging Chinese fashion designer, Xue Gao launches her clothing brand, Snow Xue Gao at her New York studio. Tonight is an opening reception for her showroom presentation of her RTW collection as well as the establishment of her high end customized suiting studio. The showroom opening reception also features the latest works of two long-term collaborating artists, James Hsieh and Xin Liu.
Snow Xue Gao is a recent graduate from the MFA in Fashion Design and Society program at Parsons the New School of Design, New York. Interned at Jason Wu’s design department. Snow debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2016 with her Spring 2017 collection for her brand “Snow Xue Gao”. She also got support from Rihanna and Mel Ottenberg. Rihanna wore her Spring 2017 collection for performance on The Global Citizen 2016. She got New York hand tailored manufacturer Martin Greenfield Clothiers and Natsun Holdings Limited to sponsor her Spring 2017 collection.
Snow’s work focuses on tailoring and draping. Her brand starts with a women’s wear ready to wear line and a tailor customized couture line. In her NY studio Snow can take customized orders from people who want fine quality hand made suiting in Snow’s Classical suiting collection. Her ready to wear collection focuses on combining, tailoring, and draping on the garment. Twist, pinch, and tie-up; those draping actions gradually become the inspiration and the concept towards Snow’s design. Snow twists, conceptually and literally, her eastern roots with the western culture she is constantly surrounded by.
At the development stage of her Spring 2017 collection all the existing garments from vintage finds and archives are used as a piece of fabric. The twisting traditional of Chinese Ma-gua jackets and kimonos with classical menswear suits dating back to 60s and 70s formed the fundamental visual references of the collection. After the visual references are developed, the individual design process of each piece begins. Suit jackets are made to dresses and skirts. Chinese brocade lining being twisted inside out become part of the garment surface. While the look of each garment is a mixture, the ways to dress them can be purely oriental. With simple tie-up, wrapping, overlapping, the whole collection presents an interesting mix-match when dressing them.
