Asian American small businesses contribute billions of dollars to the economy as well as create thousands of jobs for New York City’s residents. Yet, there has been limited information on the economic contributions of one of our city’s most important economic engines.
On December 6, the Asian American Federation will be hosting a half-day conference focusing on the contributions of Asian American business owners in New York City and the particular challenges they face. We will be presenting key findings from our newest report on Asian small businesses and offering several panels on the role of state and city agencies in small business development, the experiences of Asian American small business leaders, and recommendations for effectively supporting Asian small businesses.
We will examine:
– Industries and occupations where Asians are concentrated, broken down by Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Other Asian subgroups
– Data for self-employed workers, including self-employment income across industry, occupation, immigration status, and language ability
– The impact that the Great Recession has had on Asian-owned businesses in New York City
– Challenges that Asian business owners face in navigating the small business regulatory environment
Speakers will include state, city, and community leaders in economic development and small business.
