Teatro LATEA, Soňadores Productions, and The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center Proudly Present William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”
Set in the Lower East Side present day New York City, this production of Romeo of Juliet pits the two largest populations of the lower east side: the Chinese Montagues and the Latino Capulets against each other. The contemporary setting of the production brings together a cast of multinational and multiracial actors together on the same stage giving this classic romance tale a true New York flavor.
Language very much like New York City is also fused together in order to bring about a merger of the old and the new. The presentation retains the original Elizabethan text, however there are times in which Chinese, Spanish, and Russian are used to punctuate certain key moments in the play.
Lastly, contemporary dance and martial arts also used as design elements in the production; as the ballroom scene takes on a whole new life with both Latin and Break-dance elements are used when the star crossed lovers meet for the first time, and the fight scenes take on a Bourne identity fast and furious pace that will have holding on to your seats!
The production is under the direction of Jose A. Esquea, the Artistic Director of Teatro LATEA. It stars HOLA award winners Carissa Jocett Toro and Chester Poon.
It also stars LATEA founder, Senior Artistic Director of LATEA and HOLA award winner Mateo Gomez. Dramaturgy by A.B. Lugo, Set design by HOLA award winner Yanko Bakulic, Lighting Design by Alex Moore, Costume design by Dale Sudakoff, Graphic Design by Will Sierra, Fight Choreography by HOLA award winner Jesus Martinez, Latin Dance Choreography by Basil Rojas, Hip Hop Choreography by Deena “Snapshot” Clemente and Wanda “Wandee Pop” Candelario, and Modern Dance Choreography by Daniel Soto dance captain of the smash Broadway hit “FELA.”
