The Japanese tea ceremony also called the “Way of Tea” or “Chanoyu” is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, powdered green tea. It is said that all Japanese Matcha grown today is derived from five seeds that Zen Master Eisai brought from China and planted in Uji, a city outside of Kyoto, in the 12th century.
The powdered green tea was first used in religious rituals in Buddhist monasteries. By the 13th century, when the Kamakura Shogunate ruled the nation, Chanoyu and the luxuries associated with it became a kind of status symbol among the warrior Samurai class.
Experience one of the oldest traditions of Japan by taking part in a traditional Omotesenke Tea Ceremony at the American Buddhist Study Center. The Yasuko Chanoyu Tea Group, led by its director, Yasuko Hara, will demonstrate and serve tea and sweets to all participants.
There are three sessions from which to choose:
Session A at 1:00 p.m.
Session B at 2:00 p.m.
Session C at 3:00 p.m.
