Queensborough Performing Arts Center – QPAC
222-05 56th Ave, Bayside, New York 11364
Queensborough Community College’s Dance Program presents a program of dance May 11th and 12th! The concert features QCC dance students performing choreography by Tiffany Mills, Robert Battle, Emily Berry and Aviva Geismar along with work by promising student choreographers Mengying Lin, Candace Sumpter, Joshua Gonzalez, & Heather Gardner.
“It Only Happen’s Once…Yesterday and Tomorrow”
“It Only Happen’s Once…Yesterday and Tomorrow”, is a 10-minute work created by Tiffany Mills for the QCC students. Inspired by a reoccurring dream and how each iteration takes on a life of its own, the varied sonic world (Basement Jaxx, Night Ark, Jan Jelinek, and Bexar Bexar) highlights this journey.
“Arbitrary Intersection”
“Mr. Battle makes an audience sit up and take notice, marvel, even laugh. His work reaches over the edge of the stage and communicates with people” (Joy Goodwin, the New York Sun, July 7th, 2006). Erika Pujic, former Battleworks Dance Company principal dancer and rehearsal director, was on faculty at QCC for five years and has set Battle’s “Arbitrary Intersection”. This year marks the 9th year QCC dance students have performed Robert Battle’s choreography! It is a tremendous honor! Mr. Battle is currently the artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
“All Fall Down”
Part Dr. Seuss, part Hieronymus Bosch, “All Fall Down”, choreographed by Aviva Geismar, is an absurdist exploration of group dynamics. Six dancers compete for power and attention through stomping rhythmical riffs and baroque gestures. Self-display becomes a weapon in the struggle for alliance as their play veers dangerously out of control.
“What Is”
“What Is”, choreographed by Emily Berry with contributions by the dancers, expresses the reaction of the dancers to what is happening in the world right now and how it affects them. They also face it head on, finding ways to sustain themselves in the fight. The piece features spoken word and poetry written by Alicia Raquel and Celeste Beards.
Tickets: $5.00 for students/seniors and $10 General Admission. Tickets are available at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center Box Office, by calling 718-631-6311 and at the door.
