The NYC Lunar New Year Committee presents the 4th annual citywide festivities, co-organized by the the US-China Cultural Institute (Cultural Associate of the Committee of 100) and China’s Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA).
The 2018 Year of the Dog Celebration will commence February 12 and conclude February 20, 2018. A vital part of the global “Happy Chinese New Year” initiative, NYC Lunar New Year and “Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China” are a series of arts and cultural events where traditional culture, modern discourse, and innovative visual arts and creative design meet. The 2018 theme is “Year of the Dog, Leap into Happiness”. It invokes the auspicious connotation of energy and positivity symbolized by the Year of Dog, and aims to facilitate creative exchange between Chinese and American cultures while paving the way for continued opportunities to collaborate and mutually share in arts, education and culture. The program for the 2018 will consist of three modules: Celebratory Activities, Art Exhibitions and Public and Arts Educational Events. These activities will run through New York City’s many iconic cultural and architectural landmarks, bringing a series of FREE arts and cultural activities to fellow New Yorkers.
In addition to Empire State Building special lighting, Fireworks on the Hudson, Fantastic Art China – Art Exhbitions and NY Philharmonic’s Lunar New Year concert and gala, a highlight of this year’s celebration is a Students Day on February 16 in the lobby of David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center, dedicated to the 1.1 million public school students who will enjoy the day off on school holiday. This day filled with arts and music will feature a one-of-a-kind collaborative art project, the NYC Lunar New Year Scroll. Inspired by Qingming Shanghe Tu (copy on display), this 40-foot-long scroll will feature hundreds of artworks on NYC life from students across the city. Attendees of Students Day will also have the opportunity to participate and add their art to this unique creative collage.
