New York’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration is the nation’s longest running festival celebrating Asian diversity and participation in community events. It is the nation’s most prestigious such event and dedicated to celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander identity. This year’s theme is celebrating “The Year of the D.O.G – Do! Organize! Give!” We encourage everyone to come out, meet participating nonprofit organizations, and DO/ORGANIZE/GIVE to a cause that you feel most passionately about!
Performance Schedule (29 Mott Street)
11AM – Soh Daiko (on corner of Bayard Street) – The group has steadily increased its varied repertoire to include traditional compositions from Shinto music tradition, adapting existing taiko compositions, and original arrangements by its own members.
11:30AM – Si-Yo Music Society Foundation, Inc. (on corner of Bayard Street) – Since 1966, Si-Yo Music Society Foundation has been creating musical experiences for international artists and audiences alike. Programs include musician support, musical performances such as Si-Yo Music Presents, and educational and community outreach.
12PM – NY Chinese Cultural Center – NYCCC is a nonprofit cultural and educational institution, dedicated to deepening the understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture in the global and local communities.
12:30PM – Greetings
1PM – KNG Dance Co. – KNG Dance Co. is hip-hop dance group led by Karen Ng, a dancer, choreographer and teacher from Hong Kong and New Zealand.
1:30PM – Pamela J. Powell – Pamela is a talented vocalist and had her first stage performance at the age of 3 at the “Little Miss Model” competition in the Philippines. Pamela sings R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, and Neo Soul. She has participated in various live contests including Junior Idol, Miss Teen USA New York, and Miss New York USA.
2PM – Interstate – Interstate, performed by Kit Yan and Melissa Li, is an Asian-American pop-rock poetry musical about Dash, a transgender spoken word performer who becomes internet-famous with his best friend Adrian, a lesbian singer-songwriter.
2:30PM – Jiva Performing Arts – Through innovative performances, classes, workshops, lecture demonstrations and a strong arts-in-education base, Jiva strives to encourage the growth of the classical arts of India in the US.
3PM – Lei Pasifika – The group is focused on sharing the music and dances of the Pacific Islands from Tahiti to Hawaii. Since 2008, Lei Pasifika’s mission has been to share and cultivate these exotic cultures through dance classes, costume workshops, and heartfelt performances embodying the spirits of the isles, taking people through a magical voyage in time, places, and legends leaving you with a Polynesian wanderlust.
3:30PM – Vivi Bubble Dream – Vivi Hu is a vocalist, composer, and educator currently based in New York. She’s been leading her own group, Vivi’s Bubble Dream, that blends jazz, R&B, Chinese folk and gospel elements.
