Open the social season with a glamorous night of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and fascinating objects from around the world. All ticket sales and net proceeds benefit East Side House Settlement in the South Bronx.
The Winter Show is the leading art, antiques and design fair in America, featuring 70 of the world’s top experts in the fine and decorative arts. Now in its 65th year, the Show celebrates its Sapphire Jubilee with a dynamic mix of works dating from ancient times through the present day. Each object exhibited at The Winter Show is vetted for authenticity, date and condition by a committee of 150 experts from the United States and Europe. Strict vetting regulations ensure that buyers can purchase with confidence.
The Show’s 2019 loan exhibition Collecting Nantucket / Connecting the World celebrates 125 years of collecting by the Nantucket Historical Association and presents the best the Association has to offer in paintings, craft, and folk art. The many threads that make up the island’s extraordinary history meet in the Association’s collections, which are reflected in the exhibit by spectacular examples of sailors’ scrimshaw, journals from captain’s wives, and art inspired by the whale hunt and sea journeys to the far side of the world. The island’s diverse people, from Native Wampanoag sailors and English settlers to African American businessmen and colorful sea captains, find pride of place in a selection of portraits by such artists as Gilbert Stuart, Eastman Johnson, Elizabeth R. Coffin, Spoilum, and James Hathaway. The Association is also pleased, during the 200th birthday year of Herman Melville, to display the only surviving relics from the 1820 tragedy of the whaleship Essex, whose destruction by an angry whale inspired key aspects of Moby-Dick.
All net proceeds from the Show benefit East Side House Settlement, which works with schools, community centers and other partners to bring quality education and resources to residents of the South Bronx and Northern Manhattan. Recognizing education as the key to economic and civic opportunity, East Side House helps approximately 10,000 individuals improve their lives each year with programs ranging from basic literacy to specialized technology training. East Side House Settlement established The Winter Show in 1954, and celebrated 125 years in 2016. No part of sales made by exhibitors is received by East Side House.
