Come disco with CMA! You are invited to CMA’s NYC Cultural Festival on Sunday, January 27 from 10 am – 5 pm. CMA is partnering with the Queens Council on the Arts, a nonprofit organization committed to fostering diverse artists and art organizations of Queens County, to present works inspired by traditional and contemporary arts practices. Public arts advocate and Queens Democratic County Committee member Nora Gomez-Strauss will be hosting Story Time alongside NYPL Children’s Librarian Kristy Raffernsberger at 11 am. Children from Astoria’s Sol Dance Center will present a disco performance and interactive workshop at 12 pm and 2 pm. CMA’s Cultural Festivals are a monthly series featuring 10 ethnic or cultural communities in NYC per year that are free with general admission.

Inspired by… in Fine Arts: One thing that makes CMA special is that all of our Teaching Artists are practicing artists. And many of them are native New Yorkers! Today in the studio we celebrate their creativity by creating works inspired by them. Pick a piece that inspires you most and make a response to it! Are you going to make it in their style, or is it the subject matter that interests you? Come explore various methods of art making with us and get to know the CMA community even better.

World’s Fair of the Future in Fine Arts: The New York World’s Fair in 1964/5 was an amazing example of how diverse Queens is! With amusement rides, international vendors and more the fair was a cultural phenomenon. Today in the studio we’ll be building our own world’s fair of the future. What would you have come to a huge Queens festival? What would you build?

Rockaway Beach Sculptures inspired by Esther A. Grillo in the Gallery: Esther A. Grillo is a Rockaway Beach based artist. If you’ve ever been to Rockaway you’ve probably seen her work – she designed the wave sculpture! Today we pay homage to her work by creating small scale sculptures inspired by the rebuilding of Rockaway and the bustling community! Have you ever been to Rockaway Beach? What inspires you about beaches? What do you like to do at the beach? Join us in the gallery as we create beach sculptures and day dream of summer!

Favorite Foods inspired by NYPL’s Lunch Hour NYC at the Clay Bar: The industrial revolution forever changed the way people eat, requiring foods that could be prepared and eaten quickly on a short break from work. In 2012 the New York Public Library ran the exhibition “NYC Lunch Hour” examining these special NYC foods that are still our favorites today. Pizza, pretzels, sushi, hot dogs, Chinese takeout– what is your favorite food? Plan for a big lunch because this clay is not edible!

7 on 7 Inspired by Ralph Fasanella in the Media Lab: Take a ride through the largest and greenest borough! Seven stops on the grand ole 7 line! We look to Ralph Fasanella’s painting “Subway Riders” to animate our trains traveling between the seven iconic stops. On the painting, the artist said, “I’d ride the subway every day… I’d ride and ride and sketch and sketch. I love the subway. It pulls the city together, pulls people together in a magic way.” Who will you meet on your trip through Queens?
