Renowned fashion designer, Alexander King Chen’s SS2020 showcase at Fashion Week Brooklyn is not just a collection of meticulously handcrafted “couture” pieces, his personalized collection tells a riveting story. Since losing both of his parents in 2019, Chen embarks on a journey to give back and to use his designs to artistically express his vision and social conscience. This year, he is speaking up for mother earth and climate change. Through his masterful draping and cutting techniques, he designs garments and works of art to create awareness and drive change in behavioral mindset for the betterment of our global environment.
Mother: Alexander King Chen’s S/S2018 collection was presented during Seoul Fashion Week and it captivated the audience so much that many were left in tears. The attention garnered China’s iconic designer Hu Sheguang, who flew Chen’s show to Beijing so China could feel his presence. Chen’s show is never your traditional runway fashion show as it is part theater, part dance, and part performing arts. Chen constantly pushes the boundaries in fashion with his unlimited creation.
RONiN 15. The title of Chen’s new collection follows the story of 15 RONiN’s in mythical Japan, glorious in its days, but greed, inhumanity, and power ruin the country until these 15, save it from despair. Chen’s message is to remind everyone that “We must take action for the things we love, before we run out of time.” A metaphor for saving Mother Earth in time.
To do what he does, Chen no longer believes in selling his collections. He expresses, “I wouldn’t be able to create these pieces if I had to sell them. Screw sales, this is my time to give back. This is my time to create, to join so many selfless individuals out there, who is willing to put making money aside and to give back.”
Chen’s devotion to dedicate his collection to great causes does not just stop here. He recently finished a film project with acclaimed director/cinematographer Hayesbros called “Inhuman Love”. An ultra-chic and glamorous film about saving earth before we run out of time, launching in Feb. 2020. Chen re-emphasizes, “this is my endeavor, it is time I bridged fashion and social conscience together thru my mediums.”
