For Performa 19, Yu Cheng-Ta will explore the cultural phenomenon of “influencers” in Western social media alongside celebrity and food trends in a series of live and filmed performances that appropriate the visual and narrative language of reality television. Developed through the character of Fameme, a Taiwanese farmer drawn to New York City to promote durian—a thorny, odorous, tropical fruit indigenous to Southeast Asia—the project depicts an outsider’s quest for fame and acceptance in American culture. Fameme’s ambition draws him to the world of social media influencers and influencer events as he attempts to utilize the latest marketing trend and media obsession for his own capitalist needs.
Fans will be able to meet Fameme in person at the Fameme Times Square Reveal, during which a video of the loveable durian farmer will be playing every ten minutes on the giant billboards in front of the EDITION Hotel at Father Duffy Square this Thursday, November 21st at 8:30pm. This culminating event of Fameme’s successful marketing campaign to make New York fall in love with durians and the official launch of Fameme’s brand new rap song. Fameme will perform throughout the hour with his backup dancers live while film crews record a music video featuring the bright lights, crowds and spectacle of Times Square.
Join us for music, dancing, and durians!
Times Square Reveal is approximately an hour long.
