— Where Ancient Myths Flow Again Through Abstract Color

NEW YORK, NY — Taiwanese contemporary abstract artist Paul Chen will present his latest solo exhibition, Myth in Motion, this fall at Gallery 77 in Jackson Heights, New York. Curated by Tzu-Ying Naomi Chan, the exhibition features 7 abstract paintings inspired by Greek mythology, exploring universal human emotions including love, desire, sorrow, and memory.
Rather than directly depicting mythological gods or figures, Chen transforms mythology into a visual language of emotion. Interwoven colors and lines create emotional tension, while layers, overlapping forms, and areas of negative space invite viewers to discover their own memories and personal experiences within the paintings.
Born in Chiayi, Taiwan, in 1955, Chen brings together a background in both architecture and art. His work combines the rich colors and layered textures of Western oil painting with the openness and contemplative sense of space found in traditional Eastern ink painting. His Image · Formless series continues to explore the boundaries between representation and abstraction.
Over the years, Chen has been active in both the Taiwanese and international art scenes, exhibiting at venues including the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall and Chanliu Art Museum. In 2024, he presented his solo exhibition Universe · Humanity at the Taipei Cultural Center in New York. In 2025, he participated in the Crystal Park Art Residency in New York.
In recent years, Chen has continued to expand his artistic presence in New York. This summer, he participated in Island Reverence on Governors Island and Queens Rising 2026. Myth in Motion represents another significant chapter in his ongoing artistic journey and engagement with New York’s creative community.
A cup of coffee, a painting, a piece of music—perhaps that is all it takes for an ancient myth to begin flowing again in the present.
