LOW TIDE CHORUS curated by Helen Homan Wu – a special one-night performance event inaugurating the Invisible Dog’s underground cinema space featuring an esoteric program of talents – blending avant-garde performances, sound-visual art installations, electro-acoustics, disembodied musical instruments, and a nomadic utopia – all coming together like a paradoxical chorus.
“Low Tide Chorus” welcomes the present moment to reflect upon revelations. Striking off the night’s ambiance is multi-instrumentalist Shamos, doing an improvised set with special guest Dangeroo, stirring up an experimental tribal-punk racket. Visual artist Michelle Hinebrook debuts her tundra kaleidoscopic paintings as video art projections morphing along the soundscapes of the electro-acoustic band Windy Hill Mill (Paris/New York) – icy sub bass sonic rhythms that will slow your heartbeat.
Tonight, conceptual lighting artist Eiji Sumi will charge up the underground with a site-specific minimalist light sculpture, working with purist elements that will transcend the audience into deeper places. Orchestrating as if out of an animal kingdom, Zemi17 (aka Aaron Taylor Kuffner) is a solo musician and composer of visceral multi-point sound environments. A quintessential piece of the show, Vangeline’s solo performance captures the essence of Butoh, being irresistibly powerful, yet delicately fragile all at once. Marking the final moments of the show are two young and emerging experimental artists – avant-turntablist Maria Chavez and multi-media artist Mary Mattingly. Ms. Chavez, renowned for her distinctive approach to live sound installations, waxes her own poetics – ie. broken needles dubbed “Pencils of Sound”. Audiences will also have the chance to plunge into multi-media artist Mary Mattingly’s utopian vision of “Nomadographies”.
