Return engagement of the traditional Taiwanese folktale of a young boy who must defeat a tiger to save his village, told with elaborate hand-crafted puppets.
The Happy Puppetry company and the New Happy Puppetry evolved from the Si-mei Lou Puppetry Company. the troupes are directed by Taiwan’s leading female puppeteer, Ms. Si-mei Jiang, with her son, Jia-cai Ke, and grandson, Shi-hung Ke, serving as puppeteers.
Since the Company’s establishment in 1967, it has traveled all over Taiwan putting on performances of traditional puppetry at temple fairs and in rural communities. The Company’s performances are enormously popular, and it acquired a high reputation. The Company has won first prize in the Taiwan Region Local Puppetry Competitions several times, and has also represented Taiwan at the Fourth Asian Pacific Region Festival of Puppetry, to great acclaim.
The Happy Puppetry Company has devoted itself to the preservation of local culture and to displaying the essence of traditional puppetry. The Company’s performances have a great reputation among puppet theater circles, representing the handing down of tradition through three generations working together to preserve the puppet theater tradition.
