Young Kin: MC/rapper from Beijing with a Chinese father and Swiss mother. Channeling the urban edge of hip-hop, YK utilizes the art form to deliver rhymes in Mandarin Chinese full of truth and philosophical undertones. Yet with a combination of Western swagger mixed with Eastern tradition, the musical result just might alter the direction and future of the Chinese youth culture, the world over.
Hsu-nami: An international renowned progressive rock band from the United States. The Hsu-nami, named after the frontman Jack Hsu, became known as the first “Progressive Erhu Rock” band in the world. The Hsu-nami integrates an amplified ”erhu”, a two-string spike fiddle used in Chinese classical and folk music, into an instrumental progressive rock sound. Their music is marked by virtuosic erhu melodies and shredding licks, in place of vocals, as intertwined by heavy guitar riffs, tasteful guitar solos, funky rhythms, and metal-driven rock drumming. Part of the new-fusion rock movement, the Hsu-nami redefines the 1960s and 1970s fusion rock sound. Hsu-nami’s music was featured in the 2008 Summer Olympic in Beijing. The track “Rising of the sun” was the theme music representing the Chinese Basketball team entrance theme.
Also, at this year’s 12th Annual Lunar New Year Parade & Festival (held on February 6 in Chinatown), the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals will have some furry bunnies for participants to adopt. This is their 5th Annual I Love NYC Pets Month, and since it’s the Year of the Rabbit, they’ll have a “van filled with a dozen adorable, adoptable rabbits.” The whole van thing sounds kind of depressing, but hopefully these little guys and gals will find loving, non-vehicular homes as a result.
You’ll have to go to the Animal Care & Control of NYC, located at 326 East 110th Street (between 1st and 2nd Aves), to adopt the rabbits however. There, rabbit experts will be on hand to provide information on caring for the critters, which they say make great house pets.
